At the Minna Centre of Youth for Christ Nigeria, discipleship goes beyond group meetings and organized programs - it extends into intentional, one-on-one engagement with young people. A group of Junior Secondary School (JSS 3) students - Marvelous, Divine, Blessing, Gift, Suliat, Mama, and Malik - from different schools have become part of this focused approach. Each day after school, they come directly to the YFC office, where they spend about 45 minutes in structured sessions that combine academic review, counseling, and discipleship.
With their Junior WAEC examinations approaching mid-year, the primary emphasis is on strengthening their academic performance. However, this academic support is intentionally integrated with spiritual guidance and personal counseling. YFC staff are deliberate in creating a safe and supportive environment where these students can grow not only intellectually but also emotionally and spiritually.
Through these consistent interactions, deeper personal realities have come to light. One such case is Gift, a young girl who has faced profound loss. She never had the opportunity to know her biological parents before they passed away. Living under challenging financial conditions, Gift has struggled with feelings of neglect and often appeared unkempt and withdrawn.
In response, YFC staff stepped in with both compassion and practical support. By God’s grace, they provided her with essential school items, including a school bag, a pair of sandals, and socks - small but meaningful steps toward restoring her dignity and confidence. Efforts are ongoing to ensure that she is well cared for and presents herself with renewed self-worth.
Beyond material support, the care for Gift is deeply relational. The associate staff consistently pray with her and offer counseling, even before each academic session begins. This holistic approach - meeting both practical and emotional needs - reflects the heart of YFC’s mission: to walk alongside young people, helping them overcome challenges and grow into confident, supported, and purpose-driven individuals.
